Nell’anno internazionalmente dedicato all’Impressionismo, dal 16 ottobre 2024 al 9 marzo 2025 la GAM – Galleria Civica d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea di Torino presenta la mostra Berthe Morisot. Pittrice impressionista, che celebra la storia e il percorso artistico dell’unica donna tra i fondatori del movimento impressionista.
L’esposizione è organizzata e promossa da Fondazione Torino Musei, GAM Torino e 24 ORE Cultura – Gruppo 24 ORE, a cura di Maria Teresa Benedetti e Giulia Perin, in collaborazione con il Musée Marmottan Monet di Parigi, istituzione che vanta la più grande raccolta di opere di Berthe Morisot da cui provengono importanti dipinti e con la consulenza scientifica di Sylvie Patry, tra i maggiori esperti internazionali di Morisot.
La mostra illustra il legame di Morisot con la poetica del movimento e fa emergere il suo personalissimo timbro nel cogliere la labilità dell’attimo, a simbolo della fragilità dell’esistenza, capace di rappresentare con grazia gli elementi della natura e della realtà.
L’allestimento della mostra accoglie anche un display, appositamente ideato per il percorso espositivo, di Stefano Arienti, artista italiano tra i più riconosciuti, che crea un confronto con Morisot e i valori del linguaggio impressionista, a cura di Chiara Bertola, Direttrice della GAM.
Grande interprete della Nouvelle Peinture, Berthe Morisot ha avuto un ruolo importante nella storia del movimento partecipando a sette delle otto mostre impressioniste che si sono tenute dal 1874 al 1886 (unica assenza nel 1879 per la nascita della figlia). Nel 1874 Berthe sposa Eugène Manet, fratello di Édouard, entrando di diritto nella famiglia. Indipendentemente dalla presenza di Manet, il più importante artista del suo tempo, Morisot continua a vivere intensamente la propria vicenda creativa, legandosi in modo diretto al gruppo.
Attraverso una selezione di opere, tra celebri dipinti e incisioni, provenienti da prestigiose istituzioni pubbliche – tra cui, oltre al Musée Marmottan Monet di Parigi, il Musée d’Orsay di Parigi, il Musée des Beaux-Arts di Pau, il Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza di Madrid, il Musée d’Ixelles di Bruxelles, l’Institut National d’Histoire de l’Art (INHA) di Parigi – e importanti collezioni private, la mostra ripercorre la vita e la carriera di Berthe Morisot, dai suoi esordi connessi al sodalizio artistico e umano con Édouard Manet, fino alla piena adesione alla poetica impressionista.
Il percorso espositivo si sviluppa in sezioni tematiche dedicate ai principali soggetti protagonisti della produzione di Morisot – luoghi all’aperto, interni animati da figure colte in situazioni di intimità o nel brillio della vita sociale, paesaggi marini, famiglia, case e giardini – e racconta il suo stile leggero, talvolta sorprendentemente ellittico e moderno.
La luce, protagonista indiscussa della sua produzione, avvolge e irradia attraverso pennellate brillanti la superficie delle opere, raggiungendo la massima espressione nelle scene en plein air, sempre caratterizzate da atmosfere vibranti e cromaticamente intense.
In the year internationally dedicated to Impressionism, from October 16, 2024 to March 9, 2025, GAM – Turin’s Galleria Civica d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea presents the exhibition Berthe Morisot. Impressionist Painter, celebrating the history and artistic journey of the only woman among the founders of the Impressionist movement.
The exhibition is organized and promoted by Fondazione Torino Musei, GAM Torino and 24 ORE Cultura – Gruppo 24 ORE, curated by Maria Teresa Benedetti and Giulia Perin, in collaboration with the Musée Marmottan Monet in Paris, an institution that boasts the largest collection of Berthe Morisot’s works from which important paintings come, and with the scientific advice of Sylvie Patry, one of Morisot’s leading international experts.
The exhibition illustrates Morisot’s connection with the poetics of movement and brings out her highly personal stamp in capturing the transience of the moment, to symbolize the fragility of existence, capable of gracefully representing the elements of nature and reality.
The exhibition layout also welcomes a display, specially designed for the exhibition itinerary, by Stefano Arienti, one of the most recognized Italian artists, who creates a comparison with Morisot and the values of Impressionist language, curated by Chiara Bertola, Director of GAM.
A great interpreter of Nouvelle Peinture, Berthe Morisot played an important role in the history of the movement by participating in seven of the eight Impressionist exhibitions held from 1874 to 1886 (the only absence in 1879 due to the birth of her daughter). In 1874 Berthe married Eugène Manet, Édouard’s brother, joining the family by right. Regardless of the presence of Manet, the most important artist of her time, Morisot continued to live intensely in her own creative life, binding herself directly to the group.
Through a selection of works, including famous paintings and engravings, from prestigious public institutions – including, in addition to the Musée Marmottan Monet in Paris, the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Pau, the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid, the Musée d’Ixelles in Brussels, the Institut National d’Histoire de l’Art (INHA) in Paris – and important private collections, the exhibition traces Berthe Morisot’s life and career, from her beginnings connected to her artistic and human association with Édouard Manet, to her full adherence to Impressionist poetics.
The exhibition is divided into thematic sections devoted to the main protagonist subjects of Morisot’s production – outdoor places, interiors animated by figures caught in intimate situations or in the brilliance of social life, seascapes, family, houses and gardens – and recounts her light, sometimes surprisingly elliptical and modern style.
Light, the undisputed protagonist of his production, envelops and radiates through brilliant brushstrokes the surface of the works, reaching its maximum expression in the en plein air scenes, always characterized by vibrant and chromatically intense atmospheres.
