Kounellis / Nitsch: The Theatral Moment

The remarkable and enigmatic strength of the work of art lies in its ability to convey fundamental human experiences, to offer a cathartic moment to share inescapable and unavoidable realities and to reveal universal truths that can be understood and internalized as deeply personal. The work of art transforms the general into the particular with the aim of personally involving the spectator in the drama of existence; and precisely the disconcerting concreteness of the unique meaning of art is what is most manifested in the subversive immediacy of the dramaturgical action.

Jannis Kounellis and Hermann Nitsch share, in their works, the adherence to this perspective of extreme intensity, to this form of cathartic involvement in reality that they orchestrate as true playwrights.

In Jannis Kounellis’ works, attention focuses on the moment of profound and radical transformation that reformulates the status quo of the work, leading to the use of a new constellation of different elements and revealing the process of change in its dramatic totality and meaning. This process is based on the radical intensification of the material in its concreteness and on the sensual effectiveness of the sculptural realities presented. The dramatic moment always refers to an intelligible and imagined whole, to a gigantic and encompassing totality of events, in which every element has a fundamental and decisive meaning and every manifestation, every change, every sensual and material entity aims to sensitize us to commitment towards existence in its entirety. Nothing is meaningless; everything suggests a sense of inevitable and pre-established necessity.

The pictorial and performative processes carefully orchestrated by Hermann Nitsch summarize his intention to materialize in an immediate and sensual way the cathartic moment resulting from the feeling of collective involvement in the human experience, for which physical participation in the actions – in the case of his Orgien Mysterien Theater – and the subsequent dramatic pictorial acts serve to direct recipients to feel part of the existential drama of life. Nitsch uses various mythological and religious symbols, liturgical references and ritual elements from various cultural contexts to summarize his vision of the universal issues inherent to human life, which confront us with inescapable – but highly plausible – evidence of the infinite complexity of man, of its self-destructive negative energies, starting from its capacity for resurrection and self-salvation.

Both masters were able to create, through their works, theatrical moments that were sensual and deeply spiritual at the same time, making their art revealing a vast metaphorical realm that is based on existential questioning.
